Context of Mathematics Education in Slovenia

The ICMI Representative for Slovenia is nominated by the Mathematics Committee of the Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia (the IMU adhering organization).

Associations for Mathematics Education

DMFA Slovenije (Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia) is a non-profit membership organization whose aim is to advance and diffuse the knowledge of mathematicians, physicists and astronomers at all levels in education and research. It organizes competitions, seminars, workshops, summer camps for teachers and students, scientific meetings and outreach activities, promotes the cause of mathematics, physics and astronomy as well as science in general and is involved in diverse international activities. It publishes pedagogical and outreach materials such as Obzornik za matematiko in fiziko and the student-oriented Presek.

SDAMS (Slovenian Discrete and Applied Mathematics Society): The aim of this society is to promote the mathematical sciences, with special emphasis given to discrete and applied mathematics. The Society is research-oriented and publishes scientific literature, in particular, it is involved in publishing Ars Mathematica Contemporanea and The Art of Discrete and Applied Mathematics. It has members, fellows and honorary members. The Society is involved in the organization of scientific meetings.

Statistical Society of Slovenia actively promotes statistics through professional recognition, youth engagement, conferences, competitions, publications, and public outreach. Its activities include organizing national and international events, supporting statistical literacy, fostering research collaboration, and recognising excellence in science and media reporting.

Institutions for Mathematics Education Research

The National Education Institute Slovenia is the main national body for research, development, and consultancy in pre-school, primary, and secondary education. It aims to improve knowledge, learning outcomes, and lifelong learning quality through expert documents, professional development, school practice support, projects, publications, and national and international collaboration.

The Educational Research Institute is the central national institution for research in education. It conducts national and international studies in all areas of education.

The National Examinations Centre is the national body responsible for setting and awarding qualifications at primary and secondary education levels as well as in adult education. In cooperation with the Examination Unit and the IT Centre, the staff of the Research & Development Unit carry out analyses of exam results, simulate planned changes and offer professional assistance in all the external assessment administered by the Centre. Development and research projects carried out in this area are used to provide guidelines for the current and future working of the national exam committees at all levels of education.

The Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics (IMFM) and Andrej Marušič Institute (IAM): The research at both institutes is performed by different research departments, including Department of Mathematics. They support both theoretical and educational mathematics research.

Individual faculties across Slovenian universities contribute to mathematics education research, often within broader educational or pedagogical research units. At the University of Ljubljana, these include the Faculty of Education (Centre for Discrete Mathematics, Department of Mathematics and Mathematics Education) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (Department of Mathematics). At the University of Maribor: the Faculty of Education (Department of Elementary Education, Department of Preschool Education) and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Center for Teaching and Learning). At the University of Primorska: the Faculty of Education (Department of Preschool Education and Department of Educational Sciences) and the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (Department of Mathematics). They support research across different fields of mathematics, as well as the promotion and popularization of mathematics both nationally and internationally.

Journals for Mathematics Education Research

For research methodologies that may link to mathematics education (e.g., measurement and methods), Advances in Methodology and Statistics is published by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana.

There are also disciplinary research outputs published in general education journals like CEPS Journal, Journal of Elementary Education, Journal of Contemporary Educational Studies and Didactica Slovenica.

Mathematics Teacher Education

All teachers are required to hold a Master’s degree. Teacher education is provided by public universities only.

National syllabus and Standard

The National Education Institute Slovenia (NEI) collaborates with subject development groups, comprising teachers and independent experts, to design education standards. The NEI is tasked with developing new school curricula, creating subject-specific solutions, establishing education standards, monitoring and evaluating educational practices, and supporting the professional development of teachers.
The journal Mathematics in school, published by NEI, provides professional and didactic articles aimed at supporting teachers' professional development. For more detailed information, you can visit the NEI's official website: Zavod RS za šolstvo
